The St. Marys Cement Inc. plant, located in Charlevoix, Michigan has been awarded the cement industry’s top honor for environmental performance.  The Portland Cement Association and Cement Americas magazine honored the plant with the Overall Environmental Excellence award as part of the annual Cement Industry Environment & Energy Awards.

The Environment & Energy Awards program acknowledges cement manufacturing facilities that go beyond government regulations and local laws to ensure that their processes contribute to making their communities better places to live and work.

Now in its sixth year, the awards recognize cement plants throughout North America in five separate categories:

  • Environmental Performance
  • Land Stewardship
  • Outreach
  • Innovation
  • Energy Efficiency

Additionally, plants demonstrating excellence in multiple categories receive an Overall Environmental Excellence award.

St. Marys received Overall Environmental Excellence Award for a variety of sustainable manufacturing enhancements and environmental outreach initiatives, including emission reductions, noise control, using recycled content and land stewardship.  The innovations it put into practice include:

  •  Energy Efficiency – To reduce both fuel consumption and NOx emissions, the Charlevoix plant installed a new main stack baghouse and a new indirect firing system (IFS).  The baghouse has almost eliminated overall main stack opacity exceedances.
  • Community Involvement – The plant performed an offsite noise study to reduce noise levels and ensure the community was not experiencing noise pollution.  While no complaints were made prior to this study, St. Marys took a proactive step to guarantee it was not contributing to off-site background noise. In 2006, the plant launched a local newsletter to inform the local community about environmental projects at the plant.
  • Office Recycling – The plant encouraged sustainability among employees by placing recycling bins in office areas, the lunchroom and throughout the site.  Since January 1, 2006, the Charlevoix plant has recycled more than 340,000 pounds of materials.
  • Land Stewardship – St. Marys planted trees purchased from the Michigan Champion Tree Project, which protects 100 of Michigan's State and National Champion tree species, near the plant and helped build nesting platforms for bald eagles, which are designated as a “threatened species” in the state of Michigan.  The plant also maintained a fish-stocking program for the Chinook salmon fingerlings.

The Charlevoix plant is the first facility from the St. Marys Cement Group to be honored with the cement industry’s highest environmental award.  The company was founded in 1912, and is a leading manufacturer of cement and related construction products in Canada and the United States.  Currently, St. Marys operates more than 40 ready-mix concrete plants and 12 aggregate pits and quarries.
